Washington, D.C.: On July 12, 2013, Janet Napolitano announced her resignation from her post as Secretary of Homeland Security.[1] She has served as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security since 2009, when she was appointed by President Obama.[2] Napolitano will hold her position as Secretary of Homeland Security until September.[1]

She will move on to become the President of the University of California where her salary will go from about $200,000 to the $591,000 salary earned by the current president of the university.[3] She will become the first woman to hold the position in the university's 145 year history.[3]

Napolitano previously served as the Governor of Arizona, where she set a state record for use of the executive veto power, vetoing over 180 times in her first six years as governor.[4]
