Nebraska County Consolidation Proposal (2010)

The Nebraska County Consolidation Proposal did not appear on an upcoming ballot in the state of Nebraska. The measure would have consolidated counties in the state of Nebraska. A bill to consolidate counties was rejected by the Government, Military and Veterans Affairs Committee on February 4, 2010. The bill would have reduced the number of state counties to 30. The Nebraska Legislature, according to Senator John Wightman, could have passed the measure to the ballot and let the people of the state decide on the matter. The measure was introduced by Rich Pahls. Legislative session ended without the measure being sent to the ballot.

Wightman stated that Nebraska contains one-third of all counties in America with populations of less than 1,000. However, according to Wightman: “Consolidation of services could come a lot quicker than consolidation of counties."

Path to the ballot

If the measure was categorized as a legislatively-referred constitutional amendment, 60% of the members of the Nebraska State Legislature must have votedfor it to be placed on the ballot. Nebraska is one of nine states that allows a referred amendment to go on the ballot after a 60% supermajority vote in one session.
