Needles police feasibility study, Measure I, 2008
From Ballotpedia
A Needles Police Feasibility Study, Measure I was on the November 4, 2008 ballot in San Bernardino County for voters in the City of Needles, where it was defeated.
Measure I was about whether the City of Needles was ready for its own police department, in the judgment of local voters. Presently, police services in Needles are operated by the San Bernardino sheriff's department; this was after the dis-establishment of a pre-existing Needles police department that was found to not be providing an acceptable level of service.
Voters in the City of Needles believed, by a 70% margin, that the City is not yet even ready to conduct a feasibility study to further consider whether Needles is ready to do its own policing.
- Yes: 415 (29.1%)
- No: 1,014 (70.9%)
The language on the ballot said:
- Shall the City Council conduct a feasibility study and if the feasibility study demonstrates that the City of Needles can re-establish and operate its own police force at an acceptable level of service and at an acceptable cost which is equal to or less than the current and projected costs of contracting with the Sheriff’s Department, shall the City Council be required to re-establish and operate its own police department?
