A Nevada City Treasurer, Measure X ballot proposition appeared on the November 4, 2008 ballot in Nevada County for voters in Nevada City, where it was defeated.

Measure X asked voters if the position of city treasurer should be elected by citizens or appointed by the City Council. A "yes" vote was a vote to move from a system of electing the city treasurer to a system of appointing the treasurer by the council.

  • In favor: 652 (40%)
  • Opposed: 980 (60%) Defeated

Nevada City Elected Clerk, Measure W, 2008, a measure to elect rather than appoint the city clerk of Nevada City, was on the same ballot. It also was defeated.

Fomer Nevada City Mayor Steve Cottrell, who argued against both Measure W and Measure X, said, "I was not surprised at the results. The measures were put on the ballot, the voters have spoken and made their decisions. I never second-guess the voters, and I don’t expect (the measure to appoint a city clerk) will appear on a ballot again in my lifetime."
