New Delaware GOP director takes charge
By Hannah Mead
DOVER, Delaware: The Republican party in Delaware has a new executive director. Former strategist for Newt Gingrich's presidential campaign, John Fluharty is hoping to bring new life to the Republican party in the strongly Democratic Delaware.
After the party struggled with internal battles in 2010, Fluharty is telling "Delaware Republicans to look forward, not back." He plans to increase the G.O.P. voting base by reaching out to minorities, which tend to vote Democratic.
Delaware's redistricting based on the 2010 Census results has largely protected the Democratic incumbents, and the state politics have long been dominated by the Democratic party. While on the Gingrich campaign, Fluharty managed boost the former Speaker of the U.S. House by 18 points in the polls within Delaware prior to the state's presidential primary. State GOP chairman John Sigler has voiced approval of his new colleague.
