Primary: New Jersey is one of 12 states to use a strictly closed primary process, in which the selection of a party's candidates in an election is limited to registered party members.[1][2][3]

Voter registration: Voters must register to vote in the primary by May 13, 2014. For the general election, the voter registration deadline is October 14, 2014 (21 days before election).[4]

Incumbent: Heading into the election the incumbent is Donald Payne Jr. (D), who was first elected in 2012.

New Jersey's 10th Congressional District is located in the northern portion of the state and parts of Essex, Union and Hudson counties.[5]

On November 6, 2012, Donald Payne Jr. (D) won election to the United States House. He defeated Brian Kelemen, Mick Erickson, and Joanne Miller in the general election.

On November 2, 2010, Donald Payne won re-election to the United States House. He defeated Michael J. Alonso (R), Robert Louis Toussaint (Action No Talk) and Joanne Miller (Agent of Change) in the general election.[13]
