Primary: New Jersey is one of 12 states to use a strictly closed primary process, in which the selection of a party's candidates in an election is limited to registered party members.[1][2][3]

Voter registration: Voters must register to vote in the primary by May 13, 2014. For the general election, the voter registration deadline is October 14, 2014 (21 days before election).[4]

Incumbent: Rush D. Holt, Jr. (D), who was first elected in 1998, will retire at the end of his term, leaving the seat open.[5]

New Jersey's 12th Congressional District is located in the central portion of the state and includes portions of Mercer, Middlesex and Somerset counties and the capital city of Trenton.[6]

On November 6, 2012, Rush D. Holt, Jr. (D) won re-election to the United States House. He defeated Eric Beck, Kenneth Cody, and Jack Freudenheim in the general election.
