New Jersey State Auditor
The New Jersey State Auditor is a state legislative position in the New Jersey state government originally established in 1934. The office is independent of the executive and judicial branches of government.
The state office is required to conduct post-audits of all transactions and accounts for all New Jersey departments, offices, and agencies.
The current officeholder is Stephen Eells. He has served in this position since 2001.
Under Article VII, Section I (6):
The State Auditor shall be appointed by the Senate and General Assembly in joint meeting for a term of five years and until his successor shall be appointed and qualify...
The state auditor is appointed by the New Jersey Legislature to a five-year term.
