The Secretary serves as head of the state Public Education Department.
The statewide position of Secretary of Education in New Mexico was created in 2003, when the state's voters approved Ballot Question 1.

The current officeholder is Hanna Skandera. She has served in this position since 2010.[1]

The Secretary of Education is required to be a qualified and experienced educator.

In 2010, the New Mexico Secretary of Education was paid an estimated $173,859 according to the Council of State Governments.[3]
