Primary: New York is 1 of 12 states to use a strictly closed primary process, in which the selection of a party's candidates in an election is limited to registered party members.[1][2][3]

Voter registration: Voters must register to vote in the primary by May 30, 2014, for the federal primary, and August 15, 2014, for the state primary.[4]

Incumbent: Heading into the election the incumbent is Joseph Crowley (D), who was first elected in 1998.

New York's 14th Congressional District is located in the southeastern portion of the state and includes parts of New York City.[5]

On November 6, 2012, Joseph Crowley (D) won re-election to the United States House. He ran in the 14th District due to redistricting in 2011. He defeated William Gibbons Jr. in the general election.

2010

On November 2, 2010, Carolyn Maloney won re-election to the United States House. She defeated David Ryan Brumberg (R), Timothy J. Healy (Conservative) and Dino L. LaVerghetta (Independence Party) in the general election.[12]
