New York state Senate passes legislation to legalize mixed martial arts competitions

ALBANY, New York: New York is one step closer to legalizing mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions in the state. The New York State Senate passed legislation today that would have New York join 46 other states in regulating MMA. Senator Joseph Griffo (R), the bill's sponsor, says he has been working for four years to bring MMA to the state and that the events "will have a tremendously positive impact through the jobs that can be created and the spending that will stimulate the economy."[1]
The next stop for Griffo's bill is the New York Assembly. If it passes there, it will head to the desk of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who has not indicated definitively whether or not he would sign the legislation.[2]
