Five special elections for the New York State Legislature took place in 2012. These elections were called to fill vacancies in the New York State Assembly, Districts 93, 100, 103, & 145, and the New York State Senate, District 27.

How vacancies are filled


If there is a vacancy in the New York Legislature, a special election must be held to fill the vacant seat. An election can be held as long the vacancy happened before April 1st in an election year.[1] The person elected to fill the vacant seat serves for the remainder of the unexpired term.[2]
