Three members of the Newman-Crows Landing School Board face petitions for recall.[1]

Board members Laura Elkinton, Janice Conforti and Rose Lee Hurst all have recall petitions against them which have been submitted to the Stanislaus County elections office for approval. The three have also received written notice of the petitions, according to Crescencia Maurer, a spokesperson for the group pursuing the recall.[1]

Controversy

The recall comes after the board's controversial handling of Superintendent Rick Fauss's decision to pull the novel Bless Me, Ultima, by author Rudolfo Anaya, from the required reading list at Orestimba High School due to the use of profanity in the book. The book was banned after a parent called it "anti-catholic," and the board members upheld the decision.[2]

A public outcry followed, which included letters to the board from the National Coalition Against Censorship (NCAC), the ACLU of Northern California, and PEN American Center, and the recall effort was the end result.[2]

Said Maurer, "We are very determined. We feel strongly enough that we want to make a stand on this issue, and let them know that people do care."[1]

The group must get 1,100 signatures of registered voters for each recall petition filed. The group behind the recall says the whole board was targeted, but the other two members, Derek Solano and Barbara Alexander, are up for reelection in November.[1]
