Sakamoto joined the Hawaii State Senate in 1996 and served as Majority Floor Leader.
Sakamoto has been President of Sundance Circle, Incorporated, and President of Hwn Emporium, Incorporated. He has also worked as a teacher for the Department of Education and in the United States Army Corps of Engineers. He worked as an Engineer from 1970 to 1973. He also worked as Vice President for S and M Sakamoto Incorporated from 1973 to 1985. He has been President/Owner of SC Pacific Corporation/Roll-a-Way Shutters of the Pacific since 1985.
Sakamoto attended University Lab School in 1965. He went on to receive his BS from the University of Hawaii - Manoa in 1969. He then earned his MS from the University of Illinois - Champaign-Urbana in 1970.
