North Carolina editorial calls for Instant Runoff Voting procedures

FAYETTEVILLE, North Carolina: Fayetteville City Councilman Keith Bates proposed the idea of abolishing City Council primary elections and allowing voters in the city to sort out district candidates on the November 2010 ballot. The proposal came during a city council meeting during the week of January 5, 2010.[1]

The ideas that Bates proposed later prompted an editorial, published by the Fayetteville Observer, to call for the council to consider the adoption of an “instant runoff” voting format. According to the editorial, this format allows for voters to rank their choices for each position on the ballot. Then this will determine the winner if no candidate gets a majority of the votes. The editorial can be read here.
