The North Dakota Department of Education oversees public K-12 education and public libraries in North Dakota. The department was created in 1863 following the appointment of the Superintendent by the Dakota Territory Board of Education, which consisted of the Governor, Secretary, and Treasurer. When North Dakota achieved statehood in 1889, the office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction was created by the North Dakota Constitution. The Superintendent of Public Instruction was made an elective office for a two-year term.[2] The department managed 567 schools and 102,223 students during the 2012-13 school year.[3]
