Officials take steps to avoid ballot box confusion, recounts
BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut: Santa Ayala, Bridgeport's Registrar of Voters, has ordered 13,000 ballots and posted a schedule of increased training time for polls workers in advance of the Tuesday, February 22 special election to replace Christopher Caruso.
On November 2, 2010, Bridgeport ran out of ballots because they had not ordered enough. To serve the extra voters, ballots were photocopied; these copies had to eventually be recounted and as a result, the final verdict on the state's gubernatorial election was delayed for days.
Denise Merrill, the Connecticut Secretary of State, has asked the Connecticut State Legislature to pass a bill requiring local election registrars to tell her office how many ballots they have had printed at least 30 days before an election. This would give the state office the option of requiring the local elections office to print additional ballots.
