Oklahoma special election heads to recount
On Tuesday, Oklahoma held two special elections for its State Legislature. After Tuesday's elections, only three votes separated Democrat Dan Arthrell and Republican Katie Henke, with Arthrell holding onto a narrow lead. Today election officials counted the six provisional ballots for House District 71--two went to Arthrell, two went to Henke, and two were rejected.
Given the narrow margin, a recount was requested and scheduled for April 11, 2012. The winner will replace Daniel Sullivan (R) who resigned effective November 30, 2011 in order to take a position as CEO of the Grand River Dam Authority. If the Democratic party can capture the seat, it will be the second House seat captured by Democrats this year--Curtis McDaniel (D) captured the seat held by the late Rusty Farley (R).
Democrats may manage to flip the District 71 seat. However, the victory will not have a dramatic effect on the balance of legislative power.
