The Oregon Gas and Vehicle Tax Increase may appear on the May 18, 2010 ballot in the state of Oregon. If enacted, the referendum would overturn a law that would raise gas and vehicle taxes in the state of Oregon.

Veteran tax critic and the president of Taxpayer Association of Oregon Don McIntire is supporting a petition for referendum that has until September 25, 2009 to submit 55,179 signatures to the secretary of state by 5 p.m. If there are enough signatures on the petition, the secretary of state has 30 days to validate the signatures. This would allow for an election on the May primaries. If there are not enough signatures on the petition, the proposed law will go into effect on January 1, 2011.

According to McIntire: "The clock is ticking, and it's tough to get signatures. We're really starting from scratch, but I can feel the momentum and people are wanting to get involved. Nothing affects people more than a tax like this.[1]
