Drake previously served as director of communications for the Jefferson County Commission from 1989-2002, Chief Master Sergeant, United States Air Force from 1955-1959, 1962-1988, and as Police Detective with the City of Fairfield, from 1959-1961.
He is a member of the First Baptist Church of Leeds, Jefferson County Personnel Board, Leeds Chamber of Commerce Board, Chair of Leeds High School Technical Education Advisory Committee, President of Leeds Historical society, and Vice-president of Leeds Lions Club.[2]

On November 7, 2006, Drake was elected to the 45th District Seat in the Alabama House of Representatives, defeating opponent Pat Sewell (D).[5]
