Oxnard sales tax, Measure O, 2008
From Ballotpedia
Measure O, or the Oxnard sales tax increase will appear on the November 4, 2008 ballot in Ventura County, California for voters in Oxnard.
The question at hand is whether voters want to increase the sales tax in Oxnard by 1/2 cents for twenty years.
Doing so would increase the city's sales tax from 7.25 percent to 7.75 percent, making it the highest in the county, unless the [[Port Hueneme sales tax, Measure W, 2008]] also passes.
Measure O was approved with 65.41% of the vote.
City council split
City treasurer candidate Martin Jones is against Measure O.
- "I am not opposed to golfers or police and fire. But I am opposed to unnecessary taxes, and this is one. We have to be careful with the taxpayers' money in this time of economic stress."
- Jones said he fears part of the new tax money would be used to build the proposed Big League Dreams baseball complex.
Supporters of Measure O include city council candidates Deirdre Frank, Bryan MacDonald, Saul Medina and Irene Pinkard.
Opponents of Measure O include city council candidates Enrique Petris, Carmen Ramirez and Larry Stein. Mayoral candidate Councilman Tim Flynn is against Measure O.
