Palo Alto City Elections in Even-Numbered Years, Measure S (November 2010)
Measure S allows the city to hold city elections in even-numbered years instead of odd-numbered years.
Holding elections in even-numbered years is viewed by supporters as a cost-cutting measure. Because it would allow the city to consolidate city elections with county, state and national electons, Measure S might save the city up to $200,000 every two years.
Those who prefer to hold city elections in odd-numbered years said that voters can focus more on city issues when the election features just city candidates and ballot measures.

The question on the ballot:
| Measure S: To consolidate with county and State elections and help reduce the City’s election costs, shall Article III, section 3 of the Palo Alto City Charter be amended to change the City’s general municipal elections to each even-numbered year, with the next election scheduled for 2012, and to extend the terms of all current council members by one year in order to complete the transition to even-numbered year elections? |
