Petrarca earned his BA in Business Administration from Boston University in 1996. He went on to receive his JD from Boston College in 1999.
Petrarca began working as an attorney after earning his law degree. He currently works for Petrarca and Petrarca.
Petrarca joined the Rhode Island House of Representatives in 2003 and served in that position from 2003 until his primary defeat in 2012.

Petrarca won re-election to the 44th District Seat in 2010. He was unopposed in the September 14 Democratic primary and defeated Republican Jennifer Hirons in the November 2 general election on November 2, 2010.[3][4]
