A Portola Valley Utility Users Tax, Measure P ballot proposition was on the November 3, 2009 ballot in San Mateo County for voters in Portola Valley, where it was approved.[1]

  • Yes: 1,196 (82.5%) Approved
  • No: 253 (17.5%)

Portola Valley already levies a utility tax of 5.5% levied on telephone, gas, water and electricity charges. Now that Measure P has been approved, that tax will:

  • Go to 4.5% for a period of four years from July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2014
  • Go back to 5.5% in 2014.

Note: Portola Valley has a separate Utility User’s Tax of 2% levied on telephone, gas, water and electricity charges, the proceeds of which are earmarked for the Town’s restricted Open Space Fund.

Ballot question

The ballot question was, "Do the People of the Town of Portola Valley adopt an ordinance that continues the reduced four and one-half percent (4.5%) Utility Users Tax levied on telephone, gas, water and electricity, set forth in Chapter 3.32 of the Portola Valley Municipal Code, for a period of four (4) years from July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2014?"
