A primary election is an election in which registered voters select a candidate that they believe should be a political party's candidate for elected office and run in the general election. They are also used to choose convention delegates and party leaders.[1] Primaries are a state-level election that take place prior to a general election.[2]

In some primaries, the voter directly selects a candidate. This is known as a presidential preference primary. In contrast, in a more indirect form of a primary, the voter chooses a delegate who will choose a candidate at the party's national convention.[3]
