Recall of Wisconsin State Senators election results, 2011

This page displays primary and general election results for the nine Wisconsin State Senators that were subjected to recall in 2011.

There were four dates of importance with respect to the recalls.

  • July 12, 2011: Six primaries for Democratic opponents to Republican incumbents
  • July 19, 2011: Two primaries for Republican opponents to Democratic incumbents; 1 recall election of a Democratic state senator
  • August 9, 2011: Six recall elections of Republican state senators
  • August 16, 2011: Two recall elections of Democratic state senators

On August 9, four Republican incumbents retained their seat -- Cowles, Darling, Harsorf, and Olsen. Additionally, two Democratic challengers unseated a sitting incumbent -- Jessica King defeated Randy Hopper and Jennifer Shilling defeated Dan Kapanke. One Democratic incumbent -- Dave Hansen -- also retained his seat in the July 19 recall. On August 16, two additional Democratic incumbents held onto their seat -- Jim Holperin and Robert Wirch.

Partisan composition

Prior to the recalls, Republicans held a 19-14 majority in the Wisconsin State Senate. The Democratic Party required a three-seat gain in order to win back partisan control of the chamber, but only picked up two, leaving Republicans with a 17-16 majority.

In order to run in the July 12 election, candidates were required to turn in 400 valid signatures to the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board by 5 p.m. CST on June 14. Since multiple candidates filed, the July 12 election was a primary and the recall will take place August 9.
