Recently elected Minnesota lawmakers propose a same-sex marriage amendment
SAINT PAUL, Minnesota: The issue of same-sex marriage may make an appearance on at least one statewide ballot. Recently elected lawmakers are already discussing proposals for a public vote in 2012. Specifically, Rep. Mary Kiffmeyer, Rep.-elect Sondra Erickson and Sen.-elect Paul Gazelka have announced that they plan to focus on proposing a Minnesota Same-Sex Marriage Amendment for the 2012 ballot. The measure proposes banning same-sex marriage.
According to supporters, although same-sex marriage is already outlawed in the state, they hope to reinforce the law with the proposed measure. Pointing to the state of Iowa in which a similar ban was overturned by the Iowa Supreme Court in 2009, Sen.-elect Paul Gazelka said, "I want to give the people of Minnesota the opportunity to protect the definition of marriage from activist judges."
