Every decade, the census is conducted to readjust the population figures across the country. These population figures are then used to determine the state legislative and Congressional districts.

In most states redistricting is taken up by the state legislature and governor. However, there are 21 states with redistricting commissions that are responsible for re-drawing the districts.

The new census information is due to be released December 31, 2010.
