Unterman was Mayor of the City of Loganville from 1986 to 1990 and from 1996 to 1998. She was Commissioner for Gwinnett County from 1990 to 1994. She served in the Georgia State House of Representatives from 1998 to 2002. She then joined the Georgia State Senate in 2002. She has served in that position since, representing the 45th district.
Unterman has worked as a Social Worker, Registered Nurse, and Homemaker. She is currently an Insurance Executive.
Unterman earned her RN from Georgia State University. She went on to receive her BA in Social Work from the University of Georgia.
