Rhonda Bembry, Carol Martinez, and Clarissa Gilliam Gardner recall, Hackensack, New Jersey (2012)
Reasons for recall
Daniel Carola, Shameek Ellis, and Alex Gomez organized the recall effort. Carola, Ellis, and Gomez, all graduates of Hackensack High School, formed a group called Citizens Concerned for Hackensack Public Schools. In reference to the targeted officials, Carola saod, "it’s quite clear they are public servants who are no longer serving the public." The three recall targets had been attempting to terminate the contracts of three high school administrators. The targeted officials said they were taking a stand against a network of cronyism and patronage that has worked behind the scenes to control school board decisions. In response to the recall campaign against her, Martinez said, "it is not about the administrators personally. It has to do with, generally, how people get their jobs. Some people in the district get their jobs based on their political affiliation, not based on their potential.”
On June 5, the school board reversed course and voted to renew the contracts of Principal James Montesano and Vice Principal Patricia Aquino-Lozano.
Path to the ballot
The recall campaign was launched on May 22 when recall organizer Daniel Carola delivered recall papers to the three recall targets. Recall organizers would have needed to collect the signatures of 25% of Hackensack's 20,000 registered voters. Meeting this threshold would require 5,000 signatures for each recall target. A recall election did not take place.
