Young was Crawford County Auditor. He was a delegate to the Democratic State Convention from 1984 to 1988. He was then appointed to the Indiana State Senate in 1988. He is former Minority Floor Leader and former President Pro Tempore. He has been Minority Leader Pro Tempore since 2008.
Young is former President/Board Chair of E and S Distributors, Incorporated. He is currently owner of Blue River Valley Farms.
Young earned his AB in Behavioral Sciences from Vincennes University.
