According to his website, Newton's campaign platforms included the following issues[3]:
- "Fair Tax" national sales tax replacing income taxes
- Energy independence and alternative fuels
- Charter schools and teacher merit rewards
Elections
2012
Newton ran in the 2012 election for the U.S. House, representing New Mexico's 3rd District. He lost to Jeff Byrd in the June 5 Republican primary.[1]
While Newton and Byrd agreed on many issues, Byrd supports Social Security privatization while Newton called for using proceeds from oil drilling on federal lands to pay for the program.[4] Newton wanted a national sales tax, in contrast to Byrd's preference for a flat income tax rate.[5][6]
