Elections
2011
Hardy ran for re-election, challenged by Vincent Pierre, the nephew of the man who held the seat for the 16 years before Hardy, and Roshell Jones.[2] Though both men are Democrats, the race was seen as a battle between the old and new schools of leadership in Louisiana.
Because Louisiana uses a blanket primary system, a candidate can be declared the overall winner of the seat by garnering 50 percent +1 of the vote in the primary. However, since no candidate reached this threshold, a general election took place on November 19, 2011 between Hardy and Pierre.[3] Pierre defeated Hardy to win the seat.[4]
