Riga Township Wind Turbine Ordinance Referendum (November 2011)
This measure was approved
- YES 440 (65.1%)
- NO 236 (34.9%)
This measure sought to allow residents have their say on the township ordinance which re-zoned areas of land for wind turbines. The original ordinance was approved by the township on July 6, but some residents felt there was too much outside pressure to approve the ordinance so a petition drive was launched to allow residents the ability to vote on it. Just 79 valid signatures were needed to place the measure on the ballot, the township clerk noted that the group had more than enough signatures. The advocate for the petition drive stated that he was in favor of the wind turbines, that they could benefit the community, he just felt that residents deserved their say on the issue.
