Oates ran in the 2012 election for the U.S. House, representing Idaho's 1st District. Oates won the nomination on the Libertarian ticket. He faced Jimmy Farris (D), incumbent Raul Labrador (R), and Pro-Life (I) in the general election on November 6, 2012, and was defeated by incumbent Raul Labrador (R).[3]
