Nyman served as Administrative Assistant to Senator Russell Cafedon, and worked for McDonald Funeral Home. He was a member of the Hanover Selectmen from 1984-1987 and 1993-1999, and on the Hanover School Committee from 1979-1984.
Nyman founded the Howie Nyman Memorial Scholarship Fund, and was a member of the Massachusetts Municipal Association, Massachusetts Association of School Committees, Plymouth County Democratic League, Richard Cardinal Cushing Council, Rockland Eagles #841, Rockland Knights of Columbus, and the Weymouth Lodge of Elks.
