Prior to his time in the Senate, Katz served two terms as Mayor of Augusta, Maine. Roger is also an accomplished attorney at Lipman, Katz, and McKee, and former President of Maine Trial Lawyers Association. Katz was also named on of "Outstanding Lawyers in America." He also co-hosted It's the Law, a statewide TV Cable program carried by Time Warner Cable. He is a community activist, and has served as Chair of the United Way of Maine. He also served as President of Kennebec Valley YMCA, Chair of Augusta Development Corporation, and Vice President of the Maine State Music Theatre.
