Ron Tomalis is the Special Adviser to the Governor on Higher Education. He resigned as Pennsylvania Secretary of Education in May 2013, having been nominated by Governor Tom Corbett in January 2011, and unanimously confirmed by the Pennsylvania State Senate on April 26, 2011. As Special Adviser to Governor Tom Corbett, he oversees and implements the recommendations made by the governor's Postsecondary Advisory Commission.[1][2]

Biography

Tomalis was born and raised in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania.[3]

From 1995 to 2001, Tomalis served as the Pennsylvania Department of Education executive deputy secretary under former Governor Tom Ridge. From 2001 to 2004, he worked for the United States Department of Education in several positions, including counselor to the Secretary and as acting assistant secretary of education in the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education.[3]

After his public service, he was a private advisor and consultant in the field, and most recently was the director of Dutko Worldwide/Whiteboard Advisors, based in Washington, DC. At Dutko, he was a principal advisor to non- and for-profit groups, foundations and companies operating in Pre-K and postsecondary education environments.[3]

Tomalis has served as Special Adviser to the Governor on Higher Education since June 2013. Previously, he served as Secretary of Education from April 2011 to May 2013. He was nominated by Gov. Tom Corbett (R) on January 18, 2011.[3]

Tomalis was nominated by Gov. Tom Corbett to be the Secretary of Education on January 18, 2011. On April 26, 2011 the Pennsylvania Senate unanimously confirmed Tomalis as the Secretary of Education by a 50-0 vote.[3]
