Hernandez earned his B.A. in Sociology with an emphasis in Business Management from University of California Riverside.[1]

Elections for the office of California State Assembly will take place in 2014. A primary election took place June 3, 2014. The general election will be held on November 4, 2014. The signature-filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was March 7, 2014. Incumbent Brian Maienschein (R) and Ruben "RJ" Hernandez (D) were unopposed in the blanket primary. Maienschein will face Hernandez in the general election.[4][5]

Hernandez ran in the 2012 election for California State Assembly District 77. He advanced past the blanket primary on June 5, 2012, defeating Dustin Steiner (R) and Greg Laskaris (I). Hernandez was defeated by Brian Maienschein (R) in the general election on November 6, 2012.[6][7]
