Olson served in the South Dakota State House from 2006-2008. He joined the South Dakota State Senate in 2009 and has served in that position since. He represents the 8th district.
Olson has worked as a land use planner for the South Eastern Council of Governments. He was also an Executive Director for Lake Area Improvement Corporation. He is currently a manager of Community and Economic Development for Heartland Consumers Power District.
Olson earned his BS in English/Political Science from the University of South Dakota. He went on to receive his MA in Public Administration in 1996.

Olson won re-election in the 2012 election for South Dakota State Senate District 8. Olson ran unopposed in the Democratic primary on June 5 and defeated Charles Johnson (D) in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012.[1]
