Ruth Hassell-Thompson is a Democratic member of the New York State Senate, representing District 36 since 2001 and currently serving as Majority Caucus Leader. Hassell-Thompson was a member/President/Acting Mayor for the Mount Vernon City Council in 1993.

Hassell-Thompson has worked in the following positions: President/CEO of Whart Development Company, Incorporated, Consultant for National Office Manages and Comptrollers Association, Founding-President/CEO of The Gathering, and Consultant for Automotive Consultant, Incorporated.
