Sales tax hike receives opposition from two key figures

PHOENIX, Arizona: In a joint statement made public on March 8, 2010, Senators John McCain and Jon Kyl both stated their opposition to the proposed sales tax hike that will appear on the May 18, 2010 special election ballot. McCain and Kyl also stated that they support he right of the Arizona voters to decide on the issue, but claimed, "However, as Arizonans and Americans across our nation continue to face perilous economic times, we fundamentally oppose increasing taxes on small businesses and working families."[1][2]

According to reports, the two senators did not plan to weigh in the issue, but decided to after various inquiries by the media. The measure is being supported, and pushed by, Governor of Arizona Jan Brewer who proposed the question in order to help alleviate the state budget problems.
