Same-sex marriage measures raised over $100 million in 2008
Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Maine, Washington: In 2008, voters in Arizona, Arkansas, California and Florida decided on four same-sex rights related measures. A new report by the National Institute on Money in State Politics, revealed that a total of $101.1 million was raised on the same-sex rights measures. Despite the nearly even split in contributions in the four states, voters approved measures that restricted and/or denied same-sex rights.
According to the report, Arizona Marriage Protection, Proposition 102 (2008), which banned same-sex marriage, supporters raised $7.8 million and opponents raised $823,000. Arkansas Initiative Act 1 prohibited unmarried couples from adopting or providing foster care to minors. Supporters raised approximately $137,000 and opponents raised about $332,000. In California Proposition 8 made same-sex marriage illegal. Supporters raised $40.5 million, while opponents raised $45.6 million. A similar measure in Florida, Florida Definition of Marriage, Amendment 2 (2008), banned same-sex marriage. Supporters raised $1.6 million, while opponents raised $4.3 million.
In contrast, in 2009 Washington domestic partnership rights supporters raised about $1.09 million, while opponents reported $60,114. Washington Referendum 71 (2009) - which granted state registered domestic partners in the state all rights, responsibilities, and obligations granted by or imposed by state law on married couples - was approved by voters. In 2009 Maine also considered a same-sex rights measure, Maine Same-Sex Marriage People's Veto, Question 1 (2009), which overturned an act which authorized same-sex marriage in Maine. Supporters of the veto reported approximately $1.14 million, while opponents reported about $2.7 million.
