Biography
Welch is a grant writer and small business consultant. She began her career as a math teacher and vice principal and worked in education most recently as principal of Ronan High School.[1]

Elections
2012
Welch ran for Montana Superintendent of Public Instruction in 2012. She was unopposed in the Republican primary on June 5 and faced Democratic incumbent Denise Juneau in the general election on November 6, 2012. With 100% of unofficial results in, Juneau claimed victory, but Welch did not concede and ultimately filed for a recount on December 3.[2][3][4] However, after it was ordered by a judge, Welch abandoned the recount due to the cost.[5]

Issue positions
On her campaign website, Welch lists her positions on five issues:[6]
- Preparing for the Jobs of Tomorrow: "Our economy is rapidly evolving and our schools must meet the challenges of educating Montana’s kids to succeed in a changing world. Every student must have a strong foundation in reading, writing and math as well as be able to think critically and solve complex problems to be prepared for success in school and in life."
- School Accountability and Innovation: "Schools must be held accountable to reach standards and provide student growth. Most of our schools do well and should be given flexibility from regulations to keep decision making at the local level. The Office of Public Instruction will partner with schools to support those that struggle and assist those ready to innovate."
- Developing Excellent Teachers: "All of our students need excellent teachers in their classroom and skilled leaders in their schools. We must encourage the development of our new teachers and administrators through high quality training. They must be connected to receive support from the outstanding teachers and leaders already succeeding across Montana."
- Partnering for School Success: "The Office of Public Instruction will become a service-oriented partner for local schools. The OPI will serve as a resource to collaborate with schools to strengthen Montana’s education system based on local needs and local goals."
- Creating Montana Jobs for Montana Kids: "Responsible resource development will bring new money into the state for education and create opportunities for our children in high paying jobs right here in Montana. As a member of the State Land Board, the State Superintendent plays a critical role in developing Montana’s economy."
