Santa Clara County is governed by a five-member Board of Supervisors. They are elected every four years from one of the five supervisorial districts into which the county is divided. Supervisors can serve no more than three terms. Santa Clara County voters also elect the District Attorney, Sheriff, and Assessor.
Santa Clara County operates under a "charter" form of government. This charter was first approved by the county's voters in 1951 and underwent a significant voter-approved revision in 2006.
