A Santa Clara Unified School parcel tax, Measure C was on the November 3, 2009 ballot in Santa Clara for voters in the Santa Clara Unified School District, where it was defeated.[1]
Measure C was a request for voters to approve an annual $138 parcel tax. The tax would have been in effect for five years.
A 2/3rds supermajority vote was required for Measure C to pass.
The question on the ballot was, "To maintain academic excellence in neighborhood schools, retain qualified, experienced teachers, prepare students for college and careers, maintain small class sizes In kindergarten through third grade and provide after-school tutoring and guidance programs, with no funds for administrator salaries, shall the Santa Clara Unified School District authorize an annual $138 education parcel tax for five years, with mandatory audits, citizen oversight, an exemption for citizens 65 years and older, and funding remaining locally controlled for neighborhood schools?"
Supporters
The Mercury News editorialized in favor of Measure G saying, "Because of the vagaries of the state budget, parcel taxes are one of the few ways school districts can raise revenue that they get to keep. Given the Draconian cuts to schools this year, two parcel tax measures on the Nov. 3 ballot — Santa Clara Unified School District's Measure C and Fremont Union High School District's Measure G — are especially deserving of a 'yes' vote."[2]
