Gately ran in the 2012 election for Rhode Island State Senate District 26. He was unopposed in the Republican primary on September 11. Incumbent Beatrice Lanzi did not run for re-election. Gately was defeated by Frank S. Lombardi (D) in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012.[1]
