Senator considers statewide referendum on basketball in Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana: In a statement made Tuesday, July 10, state Senator Jean Leising said she would consider introducing legislation with the intention of creating a statewide ballot referendum on the current system used in the annual IHSAA basketball tournament. The state currently uses a multi-class system which divides schools into separate divisions based on enrollment and then holds separate tournaments for each class. The referendum would ask voters if they would prefer to return to the sinlge-class system used before the 1997-1998 school year. In a statement made on the issue, Sen. Leising said, "Indiana has been known for years for its basketball heritage, and I think it's really lost its luster in these last years. You ask why that is and the only thing you can really point to is the single-class and multi-class tournament issue."
