Hanek was a Republican candidate for treasurer in 2012. She was defeated by incumbent James McIntire (D) in the general election on November 6, 2012. Hanek ran a successful write-in campaign for State Treasurer in the primary election on August 7th, earning herself a place on the general election ballot alongside long-serving Democratic officeholder Jim McIntire.[1] Hanek's write-in victory marked the first time in three decades that a statewide candidate cleared the 1% vote rule required of top-two primary write-in candidates to advance to the general election. She earned over 31,000, coming to 3.4%, of the votes.[4][1]

Issues

Hanek's campaign emphasizes her background as an accountant who has helped fellow conservative candidates manage their campaign finance reports made to the state Public Disclosure Commission. The Republican candidate, who considers herself a “Christian conservative,”[5][6] has discussed her defining issue positions and campaign priorities in interviews and on her official campaign website. They include:

  • Transparency

Hanek plans to make government in the capital more accountable with what campaign fliers called "meaningful transparency."[6] "As State Treasurer I believe that the accounting system should be transparent and relevant data should be easily accessible to both decision makers and citizens and I will advocate for such a system."[6]

  • Education

Hanek advocates for different standardized tests than the currently administered Washington Assessment of Student Learning. She also wants to probe how state money is being disbursed for technology in schools, an issue the self-professed "education watchdog mom"[4] brought up with legislators when she was at the Capitol testifying against a sex-education bill.[4]
