Toohey ran in the 2012 election for Massachusetts State Senate First Essex District. He defeated Sam S. Meas in the September 6 Republican primary and was defeated by Kathleen A. O'Connor Ives (D) in the general election, which took place on November 6, 2012.[2][3][4]
